A true symbol of the town of Nemours, the castle is inseparable from its history, the seigniory and then the duchy of Nemours. Located on the left bank of the Loing, in the heart of the old medieval town, this building is one of the few urban castles in Ile-de-France that still exists today.

Since 2008, the castle has resumed its museum activities, after three years of closure and several months of renovation work under the direction of the chief architect of the Historic Monuments, Jacques Moulin. Two annual temporary exhibitions punctuate the programme of this unique place. They are accompanied by mediation work aimed at different audiences (local population, tourists, schools, etc.).

As part of national events, the castle takes part in the Télérama museum weekend in March, the Night of the Museums in May and the European Heritage Days on the third weekend in September.

Temporary Exhibition :

Promenade Loin(g)taine,

les artistes étrangers au fil du Loing

From october 8 2022 to march 5 2023

During the 19th century, the city of Paris "capital of the Arts" will no longer be the only artistic center of France. Multiple centers will develop throughout the territory, thanks to the arrival, sometimes massive, of foreign artists from all over the world.

The painters will move to paint on a motif or on a site. In southern Seine-et-Marne, the Loing will see the development of multiple artists'homes in the towns they pass through and the hostels will fill up with customers/artists, like the Ganne hostel in Barbizon a few decades earlier.

The exhibition, organized by the Château-Musée de Nemours, aims to understand the installation of these foreign artists over the river during the last decades of the 19th century. It evolves around different points: themes related to portraits ; with emblematic motifs such as the Pont de Grez ; to the symbolist painting of Louis Welden Hawkins and focuses on different painters : the Norwegian Johannes Grimelund, the English Arthur Heseltine, the Swedish Emma Chadwick, etc.

A marked scenography will allow you to immerse yourself in a late 19th century atmosphere.
